Ministry of East African Community, Labour and Social Protection Press Release

ReleaseAppeal to Doctors:

Today 15th December 2016, I convened a meeting between the Kenya Medical Practitioners Pharmacists and Dentists Union and representatives from County Governments and Ministry of Health to mediate on the ongoing industrial action by the union.

During the morning meeting, to set the stage for mediations, we mutually agreed that each party nominates 5 representatives authorized to proceed with the mediation process thus the parties took time out to agree on the nominees.

Once the meeting resumed, it was realized that the representatives from the union were not the official representatives authorized to lead the mediation contrary to their Recognition Agreement and the Labor Relations Act.

I would like to assure the public that both National and County Governments are committed to finding a lasting solution to the current impasse as I witnessed today.
I want to reiterate that contrary to information circulating in the social media, the mediation process has not collapsed rather; I have postponed the meeting until the union meets the requirements in conformity with the Labor Laws and practice in terms of legitimate and authoritative representation.

Phylis Kandie
CABINENT SECRETARY

15th December 2016
