Over 80 leaders from Laikipia, Isiolo, Samburu, West Pokot and Baringo will be converged in Nyahururu under a new initiative that seeks an innovative solution to insecurity dogging the region. The County Government of Laikipia in collaboration with the leadership of the neighbouring Counties; Baringo, Samburu, Isiolo and West Pokot came up together with the relevant National Government security agencies to address the issue of security as a key determinant of the social, economic and political outcomes of the greater region. An initial exploratory meeting between the political leadership of Laikipia and Baringo counties together with the National Government and security agencies in Laikipia County was held in Nanyuki on 14th August 2017. This was followed up by the first consultative forum held in Nyahururu at the Laikipia West CDF offices on 23rd August, 2017. The Friday, 8th September, 2017 meeting at Thompson Falls Lodge was a follow-up of the same and attracted greater and keen interest of the entire leadership across the four counties. Known as the ‘Amaya Triangle Initiative’ the convener, Laikipia Governor Ndiritu Muriithi, brought on board the Commission of Revenue Allocation. “Equalization fund is supposed to lift counties that are lagging behind in development and which are mostly those in conflict areas. That’s why it’s important to have the CRA,” the convener, Laikipia Governor Ndiritu Muriithi said. The leaders will examine how government funds administered by the leaders at various levels can be used to make a difference in the regions to end frequent conflicts by being innovative. “We will particularly explore innovations around economic opportunities like pastoralism like embracing of feedlots, marketing and branding of livestock products such as beef from the counties,” the Laikipia governor said. The focus will also be on the best ways entrenching the rule of law and order and providing civic education from an early age.
