meru county FarmingGovernor Kiraitu Murungi today commissioned a Ksh.40 million Meru Sweet Potato Value Addition Factory at the Baraza Park in Maua Town, Igembe South Sub-County.
The project is supported by the European Union through the National Drought Management Authority (NDMA) and my Government.

The ultra-modern manufacturing factory that has created job opportunities for the local people adds value to yellow fleshed sweet potato.
The end products include bread, donuts, crips, queen cakes, among others that have been certified by the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KBS) and are already in the market.

Meru County’s development blue print highlights the Governor’s agenda on food security, value addition to agricultural produce and wealth creation.
The launch of the project therefore underlines the County Govts dedication and resolve to fulfil my pre-election pledges.

Maua Town has had issues relating to casual workers which the Governor has directed the County Secretary, Mr Rufus Miriti to look into and give him a report.
The County Govt is also in the process of constituting Maua Town Management Committee which will ensure that the urban centre is well managed and planned.

The project that was commissioned today is a testimony of how the cooperation between National and County Governments which the current administration is promoting can enhance efforts to increase food security and generally improve the livelihoods of our people.

Gov. Kiraitu called for expansion of the factory which is currently producing an average of 800 loaves of bread so that it could produce more, and directed our Trade Executive, Mr Maingi Mugambi to help Friends Sacco in marketing of the products all over the county.
The Govenor assured the residents that the erratic power supply to the factory will be addressed by establishing a power sub-station to serve Maua Town and its environs
