Taita Taveta World BankVoi and Mwatate towns will soon get a major facelift courtesy of Kenya Urban Support program sponsored by the World Bank
Governor Granton Samboja has signed the participatory agreement and completed the formulation of a county urbanization development strategy paper which are mandatory documents. The county government has between now and June to meet other eight requirements to fully qualify to get the full grant.
Speaking at his office today when he met officials from the Ministry of Transport, Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development (MTI&HUD), the governor said that the six year program will benefit Mwatate and Voi towns in infrastructural development, economic setup and the general modernization.
Mwatate town has been earmarked for the county headquarters while Voi is the fastest growing town in the region.
“As a county government we are ready to cooperate and partner with all interested parties to ensure this program is successful. We know we can’t achieve all our plans without the support of partners. Urgent action is needed to improve water supply, ensure food security, improve infrastructure and health services in the county,” the governor said.
According to Solomon Ambwere, Head Urban Planning, Policy and Research at MTI&HUD the county will receive an urban institutional grant of ksh. 20 million in March which will later be followed by Urban development grant which will range between ksh. 50 million to ksh. 1 billion when it fully meets the set requirements.
County Executive Committee Member for Public Works, Housing and Infrastructure Development Mr. Houghton Mombo welcomed the move, noting that the county government is fully committed to ensure the initiative is implemented so that county residents can realize maximum benefits.
“We will follow all the laid down conditions so that we qualify to get the whole funding in June this year. At the end of the program, we shall make sure Mwatate and Voi towns are among the best towns in the country,” said Mombo.
Ministry of Transport, Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development chief economist Ephantus Wamugunda said that the objective of the projects is to establish and strengthen urban institutions to deliver improved infrastructure and services in participating counties in Kenya.
“Economic growth has been accompanied by rapid urbanization. Nonetheless Kenya remains under-urbanized. This means Kenya can still leverage the benefits of urbanization for improving economic opportunities and living conditions. The government of Kenya has recognized the need to manage urbanization as part of its overall development strategy,” he said.
Present during the meeting were County Chief of Staff Mr.Philemon Mwaisaka, governor Sambojas economic advisor Mr.Sylvester Mwaliko, political advisor Mwandawiro Mganga, Lands, Environment and Natural Resources CECM Clarice Mnyambo among others.
