Kisumu City waste management project got a boost after investors from India tabled solutions on how best the situation can be addressed. Lead environmentalists converged at the county offices to mitigate solutions on waste management techniques. Ideas Unlimited and Anthony Lara Enviro Solutions, waste management companies engaged the County Government through the Environment, Water Irrigation and Natural Resource department on environment friendly techniques that focused on material recovery facilities to handle waste. According to Jinal Savla of Ideas Unlimited, the proposed methodology involved more than one technique. Aerobic, anaerobic and use of bio reactor landfills were tabled as waste management techniques that focused on technology. “The material recovery facilities are capable of separating wet and dry wastes with most of the work being handled by machines,” said Jinal who expressed confidence in the model breaking new ground.
If assembled, the plant will cost an average of ksh20-25 million inclusive of a seven-year replacement plan. Laban Onditi, The National Vice Chairman of Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry, urged the county to focus on investments and prioritize development. He said Kisumu has the potential of attracting more investors. Representing the CEC Water, Irrigation, Environment and Natural Resources Salmon Orimba, Director Dan Ongor reiterated the county government’s commitment to creating a sustainable environment.
If successful, Kisumu County will become the first in the country to have a modern material recovery facility that will ease the burden on waste management.
