Governor Josphat Nanok has signed into law the Turkana County Village Administration Bill 2019. The law established 156 village Administration units across the 30 wards and 7 Sub counties in Turkana County.
This law according to the Governor is a milestone in the provision of services closer to the people in line with the objectives of the constitution of Kenya that calls for further decentralization.
Speaking at the ceremony attended by the Speaker of the Turkana County Assembly Erastus Lokaale and other leaders, the H.E. the Governor emphasized the need to operationalize the law and to make the village unit work effectively as centres of excellence in development. He assured the residents of Turkana that soon his administration will appoint and deploy village administrators and village councils in line with the law.
The roles and functions of the village Administration includes coordination and mobilizing participation of villages in governance, facilitating communities to participate in making policies and development plans, maintaining village infrastructure and facilities and ensuring civic education and empowerment.
The role of village councils is key to service delivery to the County Government's agenda and efforts to reach out to the most vulnerable members of the community. The Governor thanked the Speaker of the County Assembly and the members for their steadfastness in passing laws that will enhance devolution.
The leaders present at the ceremony included Leader of Majority Bethwel Kobongin, the Leader of Government Business Benedict Lokamar, the County Secretary Peter Eripete, the County Attorney Erastus Ethekon, CEC Finance and Planning Robert Lotelengo, Chief Officers and other County Government senior staff.
